Winning rank is expensive. Losing it should not be easy.

Most advertising effort goes into winning: new keywords, new campaigns, new growth.

But on Amazon, much of the damage comes from quiet leaks in things you already own. Stock runs out and rank resets. A competitor's ad appears on your own product page. A shopper who almost bought never sees you again. Protection is not a separate project from growth. It is what keeps growth from being undone.

Inventory is part of PPC

A stockout does more than pause sales. Shipping speed worsens, the Prime badge can be pulled, conversion falls and rank drops, and the damage starts before the shelf is empty. One reported brand example reached number one in its category and tripled revenue, then ran short on stock. Shipping, conversion and rank fell. After it held 45 or more days of inventory, revenue grew 93%. but the lesson holds across categories.

Our practice:

  • Check days of cover on your top ASINs before increasing spend, and flag when it drops below about 45 days.
  • Slow or shift ad spend before a stockout, not after it.
  • Plan restocks around sales events and Q4. Paying more for faster inbound or a buffer at a 3PL can cost less than the rank you would lose.
  • Treat restock forecasting as part of PPC performance, because it is.

In an industry poll of brand owners, inventory and stock forecasting was the area where most said better tools would help most. That matches what we see in accounts.

Four areas that leak: stock, rank, your page, shoppers.

Shield your own product page

Shoppers rarely distinguish ads from organic results. If a competitor's ad appears on your listing, they win a sale you already paid to earn. Brand shielding closes that gap, and it has a double benefit: you keep your own sales and you deny the competitor a click.

The main tools are:

  1. Brand-name keyword campaigns. Phrase match on your brand name, with up-and-down bidding first, then down-only once position is held.
  2. Product targeting on your own ASINs, using Sponsored Brands, Sponsored Products and Sponsored Display, so your products occupy your own page's ad slots.
  3. Category and related-product defense where your ASINs are shown against competitor pages.
  4. Filling clickable space on the page: the Brand Story module, a product carousel, bundles and variations.

Shielding cannot be judged by ACoS alone. Its value is the sale kept and the competitor kept out, which is why it often runs at a very low ACoS.

Bring shoppers back

Most visitors do not buy the first time. Sponsored Display remarketing reaches shoppers who viewed your product and did not buy, and shoppers who did buy, for reorders and add-ons. We start with the most relevant audience, test concentric lookback windows (shorter windows such as 7, 14, 30 and 60 days often outperform long ones) and tailor the creative to the reasons shoppers hesitate, which we find in reviews and questions. Purchase remarketing is useful all year. View remarketing matters most in holiday periods.

Hold your price and your story

We do not recommend lowering the price after launch as a way to improve conversion. Make the thumbnail more clickable and tell a stronger brand story first. Price changes should come from a test, not from worry. Where a promotion makes sense (a clickable coupon, a deal), we plan it with stock and rank in mind.

Plan Q4 early

One protective habit is timing. Use last year's Q4 search-term report to find the terms that converted, and begin ranking for them in October while clicks are cheap, instead of paying peak cost per click in late November. This only works if stock covers it. Before Q4 we split-test thumbnails, optimise for mobile, check pricing and promotions and make sure inventory is in place.

What we do

  • Monitor days of cover on top ASINs and flag risk early.
  • Build and maintain brand-defense campaigns and review which competitor ads appear on your pages.
  • Set up remarketing with sensible lookback windows and tailored creative.
  • Plan Q4 and event periods weeks ahead with you.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing ads hard on a product that will stock out.
  • Never checking who appears on your own page.
  • Judging brand-defense campaigns by ACoS.
  • Leaving the first holiday search of the year to November.
  • Discounting first when the image or story is the real problem.

What this means for you

You keep more of the sales you have already paid to win, and you will hear from us before a stockout or a competitor takeover, not after it.
